Detectives in Meru County have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of 65-year-old Evelyne Mukiri Mbaabu in Kithoka, Imenti East.
The suspect, identified as Solomon Kathurima Kairemia, was arrested on September 21 following investigations into the killing that shocked residents of the area.
According to investigators, Mbaabu was attacked at her home on August 7 while preparing supper with her 13-year-old grandson.
Police reports indicate that an unknown man entered the compound and approached the kitchen, where he reportedly asked for drinking water. Shortly afterwards, the grandson heard his grandmother screaming for help.
When he went to the kitchen, he allegedly found Mbaabu injured. The suspect is also reported to have struck the boy on the hand with a panga before fleeing from the compound.
Mbaabu was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Blood-stained panga recovered
Detectives investigating the incident say they recovered a blood-stained panga, which they believe could be connected to the attack.
The suspect was later subjected to an identification parade as investigators continued to establish what happened on the night of the incident.
He was subsequently presented before the Meru Law Courts, where investigators were granted 14 days to hold him as they complete investigations.
Police are expected to continue examining forensic evidence and interviewing witnesses as they establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
The suspect remains innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of law.
Residents await answers
The arrest has brought renewed attention to the case, with residents awaiting the conclusion of investigations and possible prosecution.
Authorities have urged members of the public with information that could assist investigators to come forward and provide it to the police.
